The Witches of Oz Blog Party and a Give Away

Thank you to The Domestic Witch for hosting this fun blog party!

The Wizard of Oz has always been one of my favorite movies. The story is fun, the bold switch from black and white to technicolor is stunning and the costumes are just amazing. When my daughter was little she was Dorothy for Halloween. Way back then the local discount shoe store did not have sparkling red shoes for me to purchase so I made her a pair using white tennis shoes, red glitter paint and some ribbon. She was a styling kid and wore those shoes until she grew out of them.

For the Witches of Oz blog party I thought I would share my Wicked Witch doll that I sculpted very early on in my sculpting career. When I think of the witches of OZ I think of Glinda and of course, the Wicked Witch of the West. While I love Glinda in all her incarnations, I really enjoy creating the wicked witch more. When I sculpt someone and dress them in a billowing costume full of sheer fabrics and sparkles... they are getting wings and being a fairy.

With the Wicked Witch there are so many things you can do, will she have warts and gnarled fingers? Will she be beautiful and devious? Should I dress her all in black or in a rich bold color. Obviously I went with color.

The costuming from the musical Wicked was part of my inspiration and I just happened to have that lovely green silk to play with.

Here she is. Standing just over 10.5 inches tall, she is the 4th figurative sculpture I had ever completed.

She is a little rough around the edges but she is wearing a rather spectacular green silk ensemble as well as black suede boots. Not shown in the picture is the necklace that I made for her - green of course.

Her hair is a bit mussed, she just got back from her flyover of the Emerald City... you can't let people get too secure in their little homes now can you!

She is ornery, as all witches (good or bad) can sometimes be and she stands on one of my book shelves keeping watch over my studio. I have faith that should anyone disturb her (or touch any of my works in progress) she'll unleash her flying monkeys.

Be sure to follow my blog and leave a comment for a chance to win a Witchy Halloween surprise! I promise, you will not be disappointed! I'll choose (and announce) a winner using a random number generator on Saturday, August 31st.

Thank you for stopping by my little tribute to the Witches of Oz
